Junior Favourite for Grand National Betting
*Prince De Beauchene The Early Market Mover
The David Pipe-trained Junior, not seen in public since last summer’s Royal Ascot, heads Coral’s betting for this year’s John Smith’s Grand National at 12-1, following the unveiling of the weights for the Aintree showpiece today.
Last year’s winner, Ballabriggs, and top weight Synchronised, are among the 16-1 co-second favourites, along with West End Rocker, and the Willie Mullins-trained Prince De Beauchene (from 25-1), at this stage the leading Irish contender according to the betting. The 2005 winning trainer has 12 entered at this stage, and with the recent strong record of Irish runners in the race, Coral go just 9-4 that the prize is once again taken back across the Irish Sea, while AP McCoy is 10-1 to win his second National, and Britain’s champion trainer, Paul Nicholls, with two entries this year, is 14-1 to break his Grand National hoodoo.
“Not many horses win at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival, but Junior has achieved that feat, and the early betting suggests he could complete an historic treble with victory in the most famous race of all,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
“One of his closest market rivals is Ballabriggs, and having given the first family of Aintree an emotional win last year, Donald McCain will be hoping to emulate his late father Ginger once more by sending out the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum, while Prince De Beauchene caught our odds-compilers’ eyes, and is 16-1 (from 25-1) having been allotted a handy looking 10-6,” added Stevens.
