A headline writers dream! First and foremost Silver By Nature is grey horse. No grey horse has won the Grand National for exactly 50 years, when Nicholas Silver won in 1961. He is also trained in Scotland, which has not boasted a Grand National Winner since 1979 and he is trained by a lady trainer.
Ladies have a good record training grand National winners. Venetia Williams and Jenny Pitman have done so in recent years, but it is because he is a grey that he will be popular. Care Balding travelled to Scotland to profile the grey horse for the BBC and interviewed Lucinda Russell. She is the partner of the former Grand National winning rider Peter Scudamore so there is no shortage of knowledge in the yard about what it takes to win the National.
All those factors aside, Silver By Nature is a very good horse. He carries 10st 12lb, which is a good weight judging by recent statistics. He almost won a Welsh National and proved he has stamina so will stay the trip. He won the Haydock Grand National trial in some style which catapulted this grey horse up the betting market. He wants softish ground to be effective but the big question mark is his jumping. He has made a few mistakes in the past and there is no stiffer test than Aintree and the Grand National.
It is a fairytale waiting to be written, a grey horse, trained in Scotland by a lady trainer. If you have backed Silver By Nature then the dream is very much alive but he does need things in his favour. As we know at Aintree anything can happen!
